AMADEUS
THEATRE ROYAL - 7.30pm
Set amidst the opulence and splendor of eighteenth century Vienna, Amadeus focuses on Antonio Salieri, exaulted as the most famous composer in a city of musicians until the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrives.
Brutally confronted by the limitations of his own talent and believing God to have abandoned him, Salieri embarks upon a desperate course of action. Salieri, competent but with limited talent contrasts dramatically with Mozart, a genius who behaved badly. Salieri has every reason to be obsessively jealous of the young upstart.
A dark fantasy about music, genius, jealousy, madness and murder, Peter Shaffer's Amadeus is one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century - a drama od immense emotional power and lyric beauty capturing both the inexpilable nature of supreme genius and the shattering self-awareness of mediocrity.
